Italy > Basilicata >Matera Go to the Italian version

Matera is a town of Basilicata, in the southern Italy. It lies next to a small canyon, eroded in the course of years by the small river Gravina.

Matera is very famous for the "Sassi", houses originate from a prehistoric settlement and dug into the tuff rock, so that many of these "houses" are really only caverns. Nowadays, many "Sassi" have been restored and some people currently live in them as their ancestors used to do many years ago.
