Catanzaro is the capital of the region of Calabria. Its territory covers a coastline on the Ionian Sea, and a hilly area (up to about 600 meters above the sea level), formed by 3 hills named: "Vescovado", "Trifone (or San Rocco)"and "San Giovanni (or Castello)". Catanzaro è literally split in two by the valley of the river "Fiumarella". The two edges are linked by the "Bisantis" bridge, one of the highest viaducts in Europe.

The center of the city is adorned by a cathedral, numerous churches and monuments and by the original architecture of the modern theater "Politeama", designed by Paolo Portoghesi.
